Consumption of corn oil was more effective at lowering bad cholesterol than pure olive oil. This is proven in a study conducted in the United States and has been published by the Journal of Clinical Lipidology issue January-February 2015.
The researchers found that the corn oil can lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or bad cholesterol in the body as much as 11 percent as compared to pure olive oil that is only 3.5 percent. Corn oil was lowered total cholesterol by more than 8 percent compared to the pure olive oil as much as about 2 percent.
The study involved 54 men and women who were divided into two groups. The first group was given four tablespoons pure olive oil and a second group with corn oil. The researchers then took blood samples before and after the oil consumption.
According to this study, corn oil is more effective at reducing cholesterol levels because it contains sterols that amount more than pure olive oil. Sterols are substances that are found in nuts and seeds.
In the same portion of the corn oil is known to contain 136 milligrams of sterols and olive oil only 30 milligrams of sterols. Research shows that sterols are instrumental to make heart-healthy.
"These findings support previous research that showed corn oil is beneficial for heart health," said Chief researcher of Biofortis doctor Kevin C Maki.
As is known, the person who has high cholesterol risk was affected by heart disease. This is the main cause of death in the United States. According to the Center for disease control and prevention in the United States, about 600,000 Americans died from heart disease every year.
